Many are campaign sites, so evaluate the resources carefully.

HMSO and UK Parliament

For current UK legislation and discussion document, see: Research paper into the Gender Recognition Bill prepared for the Minister, giving facts, figures and a overview of the situation in the UK; and the Gender Recognition Act 2004 - the finalised act which came into force in July 2004

Ministry of Justice

The new Ministry of Justice has taken over responsibility for the issue of Gender and Transsexual rights. However the Department of Constitutional Affairs also has a number of useful publication and fact sheets. The site contains discussions on the Gender Recognition Act, including a useful collection of Parliamentary questions and answers throughout the debate. The page also contains and FAQ and a links page.

Press for Change

A very comprehensive site covering policy matters, parliamentary campaigns, gender labels and labelling, employment issues etc. See especially: Legal section for legislation, cases, Employment Tribunal decisions, human rights cases etc.

Sexuality, Gender, and the Law: National and International

Bibliography by the School of Law at the University of Chicago. Most of the references are US based, but it does look at some resources from elsewhere.

International Lesbian and Gay Association

Includes World Legal Survey on legal position of gay, lesbian and transgendered people around the world, and information and articles on a variety of relevant subjects.

European Court of Human Rights

Set up following the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights in 1950, the ECHR is a product of the Council of Europe, a separate organisation from the European Union, but it is an extremely important Court. The HUDOC database contains full text access to human rights case judgments from 1960-

Has useful inks to gay laws worldwide, including short summaries of the legislation/cases in various topic areas.

Queer Resources Directory

An electronic library with news clippings, political contact information, newsletters, essays, images, hyperlinks, and every other kind of information resource of interest to the GLBO community. See: Legal Resources for a range of (US) cases, laws and commentaries.


Campaigning site containing lots of information on Gay and Lesbian issues. Click on Information Bank for links to Criminal Law and Legal Advices. Also, click on Multiple Discriminations for information on Transgenderism. Excellent links sections for further research.


Liberty is one of the UK's leading human rights and civil liberties organisations. It was founded as the National Council for Civil Liberties in 1934  Among other Human Rights issues, Liberty has also been involved in the area of sexual and gender equality. Click on Issues and then choose either Human Rights or Equality to see resources and links.

Equality Commission for Northern Ireland

Deals with all aspects of equality including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Lists the legislation applicable to Northern Ireland. Good links page

Equality and Human Rights Commission

Site for England Wales and Scotland. As well as general information, it also includes discussions on the proposed new combined body the Equality and Human Rights Commission, to replace the EOC, the Campaign for Racial Equality and Disability Rights Commission

Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission

See the Index on the left hand side under Publications, Investigations & Research for NIHRC activities in the area of gender.

Trades Union Congress

Click on drop down menu for Equality and follow the links to information on employment rights, campaign issues and the legal response to issues of discrimination in the workplace.

Coalition on Sexual Orientation

A Northern Ireland campaign and support site, with some guidance (including legal), publications and news on the issues facing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) groups.

Gender Identity Research and Education Society

Contains among other documents and information, the text of the Gender Recognition Bill (now the Gender Recognition Act 2004) as well as replies to the draft bill. and information on 'informed consent' and employment discrimination.


Gateway to European Information. Click on Gender Equalities for excellent information on the role of Europe in legislating against gender (male/female) inequality.
