Library Catalogue gets a make-over. [13/09/05]
The Library’s existing web-based catalogue provides access to its holdings of books, journals, non-book and other materials and as such it is a familiar and essential tool for staff and students. This week will see the beginnings of change with the “look and feel” of the catalogue being updated. The result will be a catalogue which is clearer, easier to use and capable of delivering a range of new and improved services in the future.

New Journal Issues in Coleraine Library. [10/06/05]
Newly arrived journals will no longer be shelved in separate Display shelving in Central & South Libraries. All journal issues can now be found in the main periodicals sequence. With so many journals now available electronically the practice of ‘displaying’ only a selection of recent issues is no longer representative of our collections. You will now only have to search in one place for both older and current issues.

Encyclopaedia Britannica

The Library has taken out a subscription to Encyclopaedia Britannica Online. This includes the complete encyclopaedia, as well as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, Britannica Student Encyclopaedia and the Britannica Book of the Year. You can also use Encyclopaedia Britannica Online to search an Internet directory that includes more than 300,000 links to Web sites selected, rated, and reviewed by Britannica editors. The service is now Athens-authenticated and available off-campus.

INULS Conference 2004
Irish National & University Library Staff Conference 2004

The University of Ulster is hosting the annual INULS conference (Irish National and University Library Staff) at the Magee campus over the weekend of Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June 2004.

First held in 1965, the conference is organised by a different University in Ireland each year and attracts delegates, speakers and sponsors from not just Ireland but from across the UK as well.

This year’s theme “New Learning Spaces: challenges and opportunities for library staff” will deal with the impact of new buildings, the change in working practices and evolving demands on the information worker and will take the form of presentations and workshop sessions.

It is the first time in over thirty years that Magee has hosted such an event and it will be an opportunity for attendees to meet together on this growing campus and enjoy the hospitality and attractions of the city and surrounding areas.

New Charter for Library, Student Computing & Reprographics Services: Student Input Needed.
The main University Student Charter was published recently and it is envisaged that a range of sub-Charters, each one developed by an administrative department or faculty, will supplement this. Information Services is one of three departments asked to lead on the project.

The Information Services Department has produced a draft charter that covers services to students relating to student computing, library and reprographics (photocopying etc.). The draft charter is available online.

We have developed this draft after much consultative work with ISD staff.

Now we need to have an input from as many students as possible to make sure the Charter does what it supposed to. With your help we can make sure it will guarantee UU students a great level of service.

We would like to invite student representatives and other interested students to a video conference to give us their comments on Wednesday 24th May at 11.15 am. We expect the meeting to last an hour. We will provide paper copies of Charter and have a short presentation.

Magee MF121
Jordanstown 8M12

We will also be sending out emails to a selection of distance learning, part-time and students with disability who might find it difficult to attend the video conference.

Please come to the video conference and encourage others to attend. If you really can not attend, please send your comments before the meeting to Ciaran Cregan, Customer Support Librarian (cr.cregan@ulster.ac.uk).

Athens Security Scam
The Athens team have received two separate reports from Southampton and Cambridge of users who have been asked to supply their Athens usernames and passwords to a group purporting to be from Athens.

This is not genuine.  This is a systematic attempt to breach the security of Athens by collecting genuine Athens usernames and passwords from unsuspecting users.  Do NOT supply these details to this query and indeed NEVER supply your user name and password to anyone.  The Athens team will never ask for your password, or contact users directly.

If you have already given your password in reply to this, go immediately to the Athens website and change your password.

Please also inform me if you receive any such message and please forward the original message if possible.

Athens have already taken steps to identify the origin of this scam, but it will be important to advise them if any of our users receive such messages.

If you have received such a message please contact
