Architecture

Associations and Professional Bodies
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
 The Royal Institute of British Architects maintains one of the world's most extensive built environment portals, architecture.com.  One of the most influential architectural institutions in the world, RIBA, with 30,000 members, has a remit to further the cause of architecture in politics and culture, both in the UK and internationally.
The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland
The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland is the representative body for professionally qualified architects in Ireland.
The Royal Society of Ulster Architects
Since their establishment in 1901 the Society has actively engaged in all matters relating to the education and training of architects, the conduct of architectural practice, representation on central and local bodies dealing with building, planning and housing legislation.
Architectural Association of Ireland
The AAI was founded in 1896 'to promote and afford facilities for the study of architecture and the allied sciences and arts, and to provide a medium of friendly communication between members and others interested in the progress of architecture'. The AAI also sponsor a public lecture series and an annual awards scheme.
Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists
Site for the professional institute for people 'working and studying in the field of  architectural technology'. Outlines its aims and defines what architectural technologists do.
Ulster Architectural Heritage Society
The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society exists to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of architecture from the prehistoric to the present in the nine counties of Ulster, and to encourage its preservation and conservation.  Regular news updates and the Buildings at Risk database are particularly useful features.
Hearth Housing Association
Hearth is managed by the National Trust and the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society to restore historic buildings in Northern Ireland which are at risk of dereliction or loss. It comprises two independant charities managed by the same voluntary committee.  Hearth Housing Association provides social housing for rent in restored historic buildings and some associated new buildings.
Irish Georgian Society
The Irish Georgian Society is Ireland's Architectural Heritage Society. The Society aims to encourage an interest in and to promote the conservation of distinguished examples of architecture and the allied arts of all periods in Ireland.
CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment
CABE Library provides an exemplary source of information and images on the best new buildings and public spaces in the UK. Launched in November 2002, the Library now holds 120 schemes of all kinds and will be expanding over time to encompass many more from the UK and beyond.

Northern Ireland Resources

Buildings at Risk in Northern Ireland
BARNI is a Register of buildings of historic or architectural merit whose future seems threatened and may be suitable for restoration. The project aims to heighten public awareness of historic buildings that appear to be in need of restoration, provide help and advice to existing owners who may wish to engage upon a scheme of repair or renovation and to help and assist potential new restoring owners who are looking for suitable properties.
Environment and Heritage Service, DOENI
The Environment and Heritage Service takes the lead in implementing the Government's environmental policy in Northern Ireland. The Agency carries out a  range of activities which promote the Government's key themes of sustainable development, biodiversity and climate change. Overall aims are to protect and conserve Northern Ireland's natural heritage and built environment, to control and regulate pollution and to promote wider appreciation of the environment and best environmental practices.
Northern Ireland Buildings Database
The Northern Ireland Buildings Database holds information on over 9,000 historic buildings and each building is recorded individually. Most of the buildings have been listed for their special architectural or historic interest.
Northern Ireland Sites and Monuments Database
The Northern Ireland Sites & Monuments Record for the six counties of Northern Ireland holds information on approx. 15,000 sites. These range from Mesolithic camp sites, Bronze age landscapes preserved under bog, through the Early Christian monasteries, the castles of the Norman conquest and the defended houses of the Plantation settlers.
PADDI
PADDI (Planning Architecture Design Database Ireland) is produced in collaboration by the Architecture and Planning Libraries of Queen's University Belfast and University College Dublin. It is a bibliographic database which aims to provide wide access to information on all aspects of the built environment and environmental planning in Ireland, north and south. Indexing of material began in 1980; indexed material includes items published from c 1865 to the present, but the majority of items date from the mid 20th century onwards; the time period covered is 12th century to the present.

Organises exhibitions, events and visits to interesting places - based on Fountain St in Belfast

Database of English and Irish Houses
This database lists over 6,000 country houses built in Britain and Ireland, many with photos.
Architectural Centre Network
An independent organisation representing centres of architecture and the built environment in the UK, delivering some of the most compelling and innovative programmes in Europe in construction, architecture, housing renewal and urban design.
English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Register
The Register, published annually, brings together information on all Grade I and II* listed buildings, and scheduled ancient monuments (structures rather than earthworks), known to English Heritage to be ‘at risk' through neglect and decay, or vulnerable to becoming so.
The National Trust
The National Trust is a registered charity acting as a guardian in the acquisition and protection of threatened coastline, countryside and buildings. It operates in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
National Best Value Benchmarking Scheme
Provides indicators for both finance and quality for architecture and includes background to the schemes and how to join.

Ireland Resources

Archiseek Ireland
Archiseek is the online community for Irish architecture and design. It is a diverse, growing collection of over 5,000 pages, with emphasis ranging from history and preservation to current architectural developments and issues.
Buildings of Ireland
The website of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). The NIAH is a section within the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The work of the NIAH involves identifying and recording the architectural heritage of Ireland, from 1700 to the present day.
Database of English and Irish Houses
This database lists over 6,000 country houses built in Britain and Ireland, many with photos.
Irish Architectural Archive (IAA)
The Irish Architectural Archive is a charitable company which was established in 1976 to collect and preserve the records of Ireland’s architectural heritage and make those records available to those who wish to consult them. The collections housed by Archive comprise the largest body of historic architectural records in Ireland and as such constitute a vital national cultural resource.
Ireland's Festival of Architecture
A focal point for the many people and organisations who wish to champion the power of architecture and urban design to transform lives and improve the places where we live and work. It promotes and encourages innovation and high standards in contemporary architecture, while making the general public more aware of and better trained in appreciation of architectural, urban and landscape culture.

Centre for Accessible Environments
The Centre is committed to the provision of buildings and places which are accessible to all users, including disabled and the elderly and the enhancement of quality in design. Includes details of their access consultancy, publications and training courses.
Cyburbia: the planning and architecture internet resource centre
US based directory of planning and architecture sites.
The Great Buildings Collection
This gateway to architecture around the world and across history documents a thousand buildings and hundreds of leading architects, with 3D models, photographic images and architectural drawings, commentaries, bibliographies, web links, and more.
Pevsner's Buildings of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
An interesting site highlighting the importance of Pevsner to architecture.
Project for Public Spaces (US)
PPS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining public places that build communities.
Sapling
Sapling, the Architecture, Planning and Landscape Information Gateway, contains over 700 links to websites, books and news stories, organised by theme.
The Twentieth Century Society
The Twentieth Century Society exists to safeguard the heritage of architecture and design in Britain from 1914 onwards.  The Society’s prime objectives are education and conservation.
The Yahoo Architecture Page
The yahoo gateway site for architecture
The World Monuments Watch
The World Monuments Watch, a global program launched in 1995, calls attention to imperiled cultural heritage sites around the world, and directs timely financial support to their preservation.
Designing Libraries
A web portal, incorporating a database, devoted to sharing best practice in the planning and design of library buildings through access to information and images.
