A.H.R.B.
Centre for the Study of the Domestic Interior
This is a multi-disciplinary research project aiming to produce
innovative histories of domestic interiors and social spaces by
combining traditional architectural and design histories with
more recent academic interests sensitive to cultural and visual
context, consumption studies and gender and subject-oriented approaches.
American
Society of Interior Designers
Under the Design section there is an extensive list of museums
and collections. The Business section also contains some useful
further links.
Architecture
and interior design for 20th century America
This site is an online catalogue of photographs from the Gottscho-Schleisner
Collection, 1935-1955, consisting of over 29,000 images primarily
of architectural subjects, including interiors and exteriors of
homes, stores, offices, factories, historic buildings, and other
structures. Subjects are concentrated chiefly in the northeastern
United States. Many of the photographs were commissioned by architects,
designers, owners and architectural publications, and document
important achievements in American 20th-century architecture and
interior design.
Association of Lighting Designers
(ALD)
This professional body represents lighting designers in the United
Kingdom and worldwide. It covers all branches of lighting design,
incorporating theatre, dance, architecture, industrial and corporate.
The Links section includes information on associations, organisations,
publications and CAD. The Resources section
contains articles, essays and reports.
British
Interior Design Association
View an image bank of examples of designers work along with their
contact details. There is also a search facility for locating
designers and corporate suppliers in the UK.
Centre for
the Study of the Domestic Interior
Based at the Royal College of Art in London, its goal is to develop
new histories of the home, its contents, and its representation.
It pursues research into the changing appearance and layout of
rooms in a range of buildings, from tenements to palaces; the
objects that furnished those rooms; the ways rooms and objects
were depicted; the manner in which people used them; and how they
thought about them.
Design
Council (U.K.)
This includes information on general design principles in the
About Design section. Business aspects of design, design within
the public sector, case studies and recent publications are also
available.
Design
History Society
There is a fee to join this society giving access to their newsletter,
journal and online discussion lists. The free links section on
the home page is very useful including organisations, libraries,
museums, newspapers and universities among others.
Interior Design Educators
Council
This organisation is dedicated to the advancement of education
and research in interior design. It promotes exchange of information
between
individual educators, practitioners, educational institutions,
and organizations concerned with interior design education improvement.
Membership is required to gain access to many parts of the site.
New
York Public Library - Interior Design
The current interior design collection is extensive, with
emphasis on theory and history rather than professional or applied
aspects. It also includes areas closely linked with the study
of interior design, such as architecture, decorative arts, and
furniture history.

This provides a fully searchable collections database exploring
this 19th century interior movement.
British
Museum
Located in
London, the British Museum contains one of the finest and most
extensive collections of art and antiquities in the world, including
decorative arts and objects d'art, from throughout history and
the world. Its Web site includes a tour of the collections.
Cooper-Hewitt
National Design Museum
Located in New York City, the museum's collections cover
applied arts and industrial design, textiles, wall coverings,
graphic design, architecture, urban planning, and environmental
design.

The Design
Museum in London focuses on industrial design, in particular mass-produced
items. In the Design at the Design Museum section read biographies
and short interviews with a range of contemporary designers.
Geffrye
Museum
This museum contains a specialist collection of English furniture
and decorative arts in a chronological series of period rooms
spanning the past 400 years.
Henry
Ford Museum & Greenfield Village
Located in
Dearborn, Michigan, the Henry Ford Museum features American-made
artifacts and products, including glass, lighting, home arts,
timepieces, silver and pewter, furniture and a lot more. Among
its unique collections are an exhibit of historic kitchens and
the only remaining prototype of Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion
House.
MoDA - Museum
of Domestic Design and Architecture
MoDA has an outstanding collection of wallpapers and textiles
dating from the 1870s to the 1960s. Many of these are the work
of the Silver Studio, one of Britain's leading commercial design
studios from 1880 to 1960. It also includes trade catalogues of
furnishers and interior decorators, the Crown Wallpaper Archive
and an extensive library of books on design, architecture and
town planning.
V&A Museum
View artefacts from a wide range of cultures from around the world.
The site is also searchable via the Site Map.
Vitra Design
Museum (Berlin)
Look at the Travelling Exhibitions section. Read about a
selection of designers and view examples of their work.

Although the museum features the work of Danish artists and craftsmen,

design associations and events/exhibitions. It also has articles

Design Addict
This is a good resource for modern, post-modern and contemporary
design of the 20th-21st centuries. You'll find searchable indexes
on designers and producers, on furniture, lighting, dinnerware,
accessories, glass, ceramic, plastic, wood and metal ware. It
also provides an excellent categorised links section plus virtual
exhibitions, essays on design issues, an events calendar and a
design discussion forum.
Designandfun
View the gallery of 1950-1970's items including lighting, textiles
and furniture among others. There are some articles/interviews
with designers, a designers index and an excellent further Links
section.
Design Nation

This site shows examples of modern and contemporary furniture,

Italian and European designers.
ISdesignnet
ISdesignNET is the online version of Interiors and Sources
magazine for interior designers and architects. The site provides
access to the current issue and to back issues of the magazine
dating back to March 1995. Articles can be located by topic or
author. A directory and source guide that can be searched
for products, suppliers and services. There is a section dedicated
to the EnvironDesign conference on 'environmental stewardship',
which includes links to pages dealing with sustainable design
issues.
J.R Burrows - Historical Design
Merchants
This is a specialist decorative furnishings supplier in the
English tradition, featuring Arts & Crafts Movement wallpaper,
furnishing fabric and William Morris carpeting marketed as the
Burrows Studio Collection, Scottish lace curtains, and the Stourvale
Mill Collection of reproduction nineteenth century carpeting from
the Federal, Neo-Classical and Victorian periods.
